1:M Cyber Security News 08/02/25

Greetings & salutation everyone,

It’s been a crazy time to be alive, with all the security & AI things happening nonstop.

And I will start the newsletter by speaking seriously about AI.

I’ve been following the GenAI video explosion for a while now, and have been carefully considering when it would be time to post this message.

But as of the last month – when Google Veo-3 was released –  and after watching the countless new Veo-3-generated movie clips, fake street interviews (and everything in between), I think we have reached an inflection point.

AI-generated videos & actors are so incredibly believable now to watch, that I can’t fully trust or believe any online video clip, even if I see it.

An online video we are watching today, may just be all prompts.

Yes, AI-generated video tech has been available for a while now, but Google’s Veo-3 has democratized it in such a way, and taken it to such a new level, that I am questioning everything I see on any social media platform – and the more believable the actors are in the clip, the more I might question it’s authenticity.

There are AI vendors working feverishly to make tech available that will allow us to verify AI-generated content. But it will be a while before it becomes ubiquitous to the masses.

So I don’t take saying this lightly, but with respect to security awareness, please do not fully trust any video content or actors you see online anymore as being real. Please use your critical thinking skills when considering its message, the source and the author of the video.

OK, having said that, here are some interesting articles in the world of security + some AI goodies 🙂

A great article on locking down your browser, email and online searches to make them more private. Privacy-focused options for email, browsers, and search engines are becoming more popular. For example, Mullvad and Vivaldi are browsers that block tracking, while search engines like Qwant, Mojeek, Startpage, and Ecosia aim to protect user data and reduce reliance on Big Tech. Email services like ProtonMail and Tuta offer strong encryption and avoid tracking:

With all the hype around AI video generators these days, be super careful not to download any dodgy ones off the Internet. Trust me,  hackers are ALL over this AI video buzz at the moment,

Google has announced the rollout of  AI-powered scam detection features to secure Android device users and their personal information. These models run completely on-device, alerting users in the event of a likely scam. Users then have an option to either dismiss or report and block the sender. The setting is enabled by default and applies only to conversations with phone numbers that are not in the device’s contact list

Unfortunately scammers are all over LinkedIn, and will either entice you to join a fake company & into a fake job role. Or wait till you start working at a new company, then text you pretending to be your new CEO and ask you to buy them emergency gift cards for someone. Either way, dont fall for it!

We may soon be able to connect our iPhones to both Googles Gemini as well as ChatGPT for our AI needs. Good stuff 🙂

Samsung is making its new Galaxy phones safer with some smart upgrades. They added something called KEEP, which locks each app’s important info in its own secret box. Another tool, Knox Vault, acts like a super-strong safe to protect your personal stuff like your habits and settings. If a connected device looks dangerous, a system called Knox Matrix will block it and help you fix it. Samsung also improved Secure Wi-Fi, so even if someone tries to hack your phone using super powerful future tech (like quantum computers), your info stays safe. It even turns on extra protection when you join public Wi-Fi. All of this helps keep your phone and personal data safe from bad guys.

This is the world we are stepping into: one where multiple AI agents will be doing all of your work for: browsing, buying things, booking reservations etc etc. In this article they tested OpenAI’s new ChatGPT Agents—AI tools that can browse the web and complete tasks—and found them clumsy, glitchy, and sometimes hilariously off-track. One agent tried to play online chess but couldn’t move the pieces properly, while others messed up tasks like online shopping or making a presentation.

And here is some new AI solution that can perfectly mimic your voice. Think about the security systems it can bypass if the system thinks it’s talking to you (think banking authorization!):

If you receive a text saying you’re overdue on a parking or speeding ticket, it’s very likely a scam. Beware! Don’t click on any links in, or respond to, unexpected texts. Scammers want you to react quickly to get your personal information before you realize it’s a scam. Stop and talk to someone you trust.

Google plans to stop using SMS text messages for Gmail 2FA and switch to QR codes, which are safer. Scammers have found ways to trick users through SMS, like stealing codes or hijacking phone numbers. QR codes avoid those risks by not using numbers that can be intercepted. While not as strong as security keys or authenticator apps, QR codes are easier to use and still much more secure than SMS.
